1. I enjoyed reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao because the text, characters, and plot were engaging and interesting. What I liked about this novel was that I didn't feel like I was reading just to finish it, but reading to understand. What I mean by that is that this novel was lively and energetic, keeping me engaged as I was reading. I was always anxious to find out what would happen next or what kind of drama would spiral down. Díaz uses a lot of foreshadowing, for example, that always served as a cliffhanger. The level of eventful drama and activity made the actual reading process enjoyable.
2. This is a good piece of literature because it highlights a refreshing cultural perspective. What I mean by this is that often literary works of areas other than those in Western culture are often underrepresented and overlooked. However, Díaz' novel challenges the typical Eurocentric Western literary canon by bringing an ethnic culture and society into light. He introduces to us another part of the world through the story and characters, which is a perfect example of celebrating diversity in literature. Another reason this is a good piece of literature is because of the liveliness of the text itself, aside from the plot development. For example, he integrates allusions to pop culture and uses Spanish language as diction which brightens the experience of reading. Considering the book from a micro perspective and examining the actual words, his novel should be considered a good piece of literature because of his unique writing style itself.
3. I enjoyed Essay 1 because it was an infusion of examining the novel from both a specific and broad perspective. For example, the prompt asked us to look at the novel from a very specific view by finding the actual pop culture references that Díaz used throughout the novel, but then connect it to his larger purpose in writing the book. For this reason I feel that the prompt was a creative approach to the practice of literary analysis. It allowed us to contribute our thinking and connect it to our modern generation and its following of pop culture while also gaining a sense of Oscar's life within the social and historical framework of his era. What I found challenging was trying to figure out which references belonged specifically to Marvel as I was searching for quotes. I also had some trouble with the thesis statement as I had to condense the variety of Díaz' purpose and ideas into a cohesive sentence. I also worried that my ideas would be wrong to that of Díaz. Overall, it was fun yet challenging.
